The biosphere is the global sum of all ecosystems. It is defined as the part of earth, which is habituated. The biosphere is also known as living mantle. Different subdivisions of biosphere including Hydrosphere, Lithosphere and Atmosphere interact with each other and do not occur alone. They provide a crucial role in the existence of organisms. The biosphere sustains us, both in the food that we eat, and in the air that we breathe. Whether we are vegetarians or meat-eaters, the energy we need and the protein we need to build our bodies comes from things in the biosphere. We also need oxygen to breathe, and the organisms on the sea and on the earth use our waste carbon dioxide, creating the oxygen we need to breathe. Without the biosphere, life on Earth as we know it would not exist. It allows for interaction between life forms and the environment. The need to understand the importance of biosphere functions has became very important especially in the recent decades. The biosphere is as important as life itself because it is all of life. Without the biosphere, the Earth would be a lifeless planet.
The continued functioning of the biosphere is dependent not only on the maintenance of the intimate interactions among the myriad species within local communities but also on the looser yet crucial interactions of all species and communities around the globe. Biosphere reserves are sites established by countries and recognized under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science around the world. As places that seek to reconcile conservation of biological and cultural diversity and economic and social development through partnerships between people and nature, they are ideal to test and demonstrate innovative approaches to sustainable development from local to international scales.

The GIAN Conference in 2013 is intended to focus on “Biosphere Reserves-The Way to

Sustainability” which covers the following topics:

1. Social, cultural and legal opportunities and challenges

2. Integrated land and water resources

3. Regional development and infrastructure
